The dialogue-less film follows the major life stages of a castaway on a deserted tropical island populated by turtles, crabs and birds.

The Red Turtle is not a co-production, not even a subcontract work. Staff credits are entirely composed of non-Japanese creators. Studio Ghibli is only participating as part of the production committee.
